Description
Danae (1907) is a painting by the Austrian symbolist artist Gustav Klimt. The subject of the painting is Danae, a mythological figure from Greek mythology who was the daughter of King Acrisius of Argos. According to the legend, Zeus, the king of gods, disguised himself as a golden rain and impregnated her while she was locked inside a bronze tower to prevent her from having children. The painting shows Danae lying on a couch, with Zeus represented by a shimmering disc of gold above her, while she looks up at him in wonder and anticipation. Klimt's use of vivid colors, intricate patterns, and the symbolism of gold in the work reflect his unique style known as the Golden Phase.
