Description

"Esto si que es leer" (That certainly is being able to read) is a painting created by Francisco de Goya in 1796-1797. The work is part of his series called "Los Caprichos," which consists of 80 engravings that satirize human follies and foibles. In this particular painting, Goya portrays a young girl who has been caught stealing bread from a baker's cart by an elderly woman. The girl is seen holding the stolen loaf while being scolded by the old woman. The scene is a critique on the poverty and hardship faced by the lower classes during that time in Spanish society, as well as the hypocrisy of those who were supposed to be the moral authorities. The painting's title, "Esto si que es leer" (That certainly is being able to read), is an ironic comment on the old woman's ability to read and understand the situation. Goya suggests that her inability to read or comprehend the world around her doesn't excuse her from moral judgments. Overall, "Esto si que es leer" is a powerful commentary on the social and moral issues of the time through its satirical portrayal of the events unfolding in the painting.
