Description
Tantalo (Tantalus) is a painting created by Francisco de Goya between 1796 and 1797. It is part of his "Caprichos" series, which consists of 80 etchings that aim to criticize the society of the time in Spain. Tantalo depicts the Greek mythological figure, Tantalus, who was punished by the gods for his crimes by being condemned to eternally suffer in the Underworld. He is shown standing on a rock with water flowing underneath but unable to drink, and fruit hanging above him that he cannot reach. The painting serves as a metaphor for the human struggle to attain happiness and satisfaction, as Tantalus's desires are forever out of reach. Goya's use of dark tones and dramatic lighting adds to the overall melancholic atmosphere of the piece.
