Bedtime & West
Bedtime & West are a light and sound art duo whose laser and soundscape installations run for a few nights at a time, in the dark, at festivals like Krankenhaus and Vogrie Pogrie. Photographs of lasers in a black forest lose most of the magic and none of the sound comes through, and for everyone who was not there, the website is the work. We built a website that plays their real footage under WebGL light that moves with their soundtrack, and tells every installation through its own film.
Light you can hear.
Bedtime & West are Sophia West, a laser artist, and Bedtime, a soundscape artist and writer. Their installations exist for a few nights at a time, in the dark, in forest clearings at festivals like Krankenhaus at Muncaster Castle, Vogrie Pogrie, Eden and Noisily. Photographs of lasers in a black forest flatten into a few coloured lines, and the sound, which is half of the work, does not come through at all. The website is where people who were not in the forest meet the work, so it had to carry the feeling of standing inside the piece, sound included, without getting in the way of the work itself.
We built the site in Astro, so every page is plain, fast HTML and only the moving parts load JavaScript. The home page plays real festival footage behind a chromatic WebGL wave, the work and events pages run a field of laser lines, and the contact page has a chroma shader of its own, so every page looks lit rather than decorated. A soundtrack built on Howler fades in after the first scroll, with a tap-for-sound prompt on iPhone where scrolling does not unlock audio. A Web Audio analyser splits that soundtrack into bass, mid and treble, and the three shaders listen to those bands, so the light on the page moves with the music the way it does in the forest. When a visitor opens one of the installation films, the soundtrack ducks underneath it and comes back when the film stops. Each installation is a content file with a checked schema, so the duo add new work, films and slideshows without touching the layout. Everything still works with sound off, and every shader respects the reduced-motion setting.
It only exists at night.

Into the canopy

Eden2025
“This one ended up with a small lake reflecting the sparkling projections above.”

KrankenhausMuncaster Castle
“A sensory respite nestled amongst the rhododendrons of the Muncaster Castle gardens.”

Vogrie Pogrie2024
“Children and adults alike spent hours looking up at the illuminated canopy above the forest clearing.”

Noisily2024
“A beautiful space where the people could rest while not being expected to do or buy anything.”
Turn it up and watch.
Three rooms, each lit its own way.
The front door
The home page opens on footage from a real installation, darkened so the type reads, with a chromatic WebGL wave blended over the top so the lasers in the film and the light on the screen run together. The wave listens to the soundtrack once the visitor lets the sound in.
- →Festival footage, not stock, behind the name
- →A WebGL wave blended over the film that moves with the music
- →Parallax layers that stop for visitors who ask for less motion

The work
Each installation is a glass card grouped by festivals and creative practice. A card opens into its own film or slideshow with the story behind the piece, and the ambient soundtrack drops out of the way while the film plays. The guestbook and the festival testimonials sit at the end.
- →Films and slideshows for every piece, opened in place
- →Soundtrack ducked under each film and restored after
- →Guestbook pages and festival testimonials in a carousel

Who they are
The contact page introduces the duo and then each artist on their own: Sophia West, who uses her synaesthesia to feel what sound looks like, and Bedtime, who samples everyday objects into drones and spatial mixes. Each has their own socials. Behind it all, a chroma laser shader burns slowly at the edge of the page.
- →The duo first, then each artist with their own bio and socials
- →Booking email and Instagram up front
- →Its own laser shader, listening to the same soundtrack

Spellbound, on the forest floor.
“As the night turned dark, the magic appeared, and everyone who visited was spellbound. Hypnotic and beautiful, everyone raved about their experience.”
“The children played in and out of the lasers and haze, many people lay on the forest floor, looking up at the lights dancing through the trees and being bathed in the soundscape and storytelling.”
The site is live. Open it somewhere dark, turn the sound up, and step into the work of Bedtime & West.
- 01Real installation footage on the home page instead of stills, under a WebGL wave that moves with the soundtrack
- 02One soundtrack split into bass, mid and treble bands that drive three page shaders
- 03Sound unlocks on the first scroll on desktop, with a tap-for-sound prompt where iPhone needs one
- 04The ambient soundtrack ducks automatically while an installation film plays
- 05Eight installation and practice pieces told through their own films and slideshows, plus the festival guestbook
- 06Installation content kept as schema-checked files, so new work is added without touching the design
- 07Every page works with sound off, and every shader honours reduced motion
