Banner Sizes Guide for Events and Trade Shows

Choosing the right banner size can make the difference between a stand that draws attention and one that gets lost in the crowd. Whether you're exhibiting at a trade show, hosting a conference, promoting a sale, or branding a shop front, understanding standard banner sizes and their best use cases will help you make the right investment.

Pull-up (roller) banners are the most popular choice for indoor events, trade shows, and reception areas. The standard size is 850mm x 2000mm, which provides excellent visibility without taking up too much floor space. For larger displays, 1000mm x 2000mm and 1200mm x 2000mm options offer more design real estate. These banners come with a built-in retractable cassette, making them incredibly portable — most fit into a carry case that one person can transport easily.

X-frame banners are a lightweight, budget-friendly alternative to pull-up banners. Typically sized at 600mm x 1600mm or 800mm x 1800mm, they're ideal for shorter-term promotions, point-of-sale displays, and events where you need multiple units without breaking the budget. The graphic is held in place by an X-shaped frame at the back, which makes swapping graphics simple and cost-effective.

For outdoor events, festivals, and shop fronts, PVC vinyl banners are the go-to choice. Common sizes include 2000mm x 500mm for horizontal fence banners, 1200mm x 900mm for A-board inserts, and custom sizes up to 15 metres wide for building wraps. Outdoor banners should be printed on heavy-duty 440gsm PVC with UV-resistant inks and finished with reinforced eyelets every 500mm for secure fixing. If wind is a factor, consider mesh banners — they allow air to pass through, reducing wind load by up to 70%.

Pop-up display systems create an impressive backdrop for exhibition stands. A standard 3x3 curved pop-up display measures approximately 3000mm x 2200mm and creates a seamless, professional background. These systems use magnetic bars to hold individual graphic panels in place, and the entire display packs down into two wheeled cases. For larger stands, 3x4 and 3x5 configurations are available. Pair a pop-up display with a matching podium wrap and pull-up banners for a cohesive, professional look.

When designing for any banner format, keep your key message in the top third of the design — this is what people see first, especially in crowded environments. Use large, bold headlines that are readable from at least 2 metres away. Limit body text to essential information and use bullet points rather than paragraphs. Include your logo, website, and one clear call to action. For pull-up banners specifically, avoid placing important content in the bottom 100mm — this area is often obscured by the cassette mechanism.

At GLA GFX, we print all banner formats in-house and can advise on the best size and material for your specific event. If you're unsure, send us your brief and we'll recommend the most effective solution for your space and budget.
